Day Trip to Kamikochi from Takayama — Complete Guide (2026)
Hike the Japan Alps without a car · Bus routes, trail maps & guided tour options
Tucked into the Northern Japan Alps at around 1,500 metres above sea level, Kamikochi is one of Japan's most celebrated mountain resorts — a flat, green valley threaded by the crystal-clear Azusa River and framed by the jagged Hotaka peaks. The good news: you don't need a single piece of climbing gear to enjoy it. Day trips from Takayama are easy, and the scenery is extraordinary.
