The Experience

More than a cooking class

In addition to learning the traditional Japanese home cooking recipes, you'll experience what it feels like to be welcomed into a Japanese home.

As you enter an old machiya that has sheltered one family for over two centuries, you begin to understand that Japanese culture isn't found only in temples or museums — it lives inside ordinary homes.

What You'll Experience
1
Enter a Living Home
Step inside a family residence that has stood for over 200 years. Rather than visiting a preserved museum, you'll experience a house that continues to evolve with everyday life. Meet the family, enjoy tea together, and discover how traditional homes are designed around community, seasons, and hospitality.
2
Cook as Families Do
Prepare lunch or dinner together using seasonal ingredients from Takayama. You will learn why certain ingredients are used, how meals are balanced, and what cooking means in everyday Japanese life. Food becomes a conversation.
3
Enjoy the Table
In Japan, meals are about much more than eating. Gather around the family table and enjoy what you've created together. This is where stories are exchanged, questions are asked, and cultures quietly meet. Many guests tell us this conversation is what they remember most.

Place&People

The Place

The house where 5,000 locals were born

This was the first maternity clinic in Takayama — ask around the old town and you'll find that most locals were born right here.

A registered cultural property in the heart of the Old Town, it looks like a museum from the street. But it's a home where a family genuinely still lives.

The People

A local family protecting 200 years of history

For generations, this family has kept the house — and its story — alive. They open their home not as instructors, but as neighbours.

They believe the real Takayama is found in everyday life, shared over a meal. You'll cook together, laugh together, and swap stories long after the food is gone.

Why
Food?

Food is how culture becomes visible.

Every country has recipes. But every family has traditions. Preparing a meal together naturally opens conversations about seasons, family life, respect for ingredients, celebrations, and everyday customs.

Without trying to teach culture, you begin to experience it.

FAQs

Yes — children are very welcome and often the ones who enjoy this most. Tasks are adjusted for age and ability, and the host family is experienced with young guests. The market walk at the start is particularly popular with kids.
Please let us know at the time of booking. Vegetarian adjustments are straightforward. Nut allergies and most common intolerances can be managed with advance notice. We'll always be transparent about what's possible rather than promise something we can't deliver.
A machiya is a traditional Japanese townhouse. Ours is in Takayama's historic old town — a 200-year-old wooden building with dark timber beams and a working kitchen where the family still cooks every day.
No — it sends us an inquiry. Every experience is private and arranged individually, so we confirm availability, discuss any adjustments, and finalise everything together. We reply within 24 hours. Payment is arranged directly with us after confirmation.
Cancellations 14+ days before receive a full refund. 7–13 days receive 50%. Within 7 days, refunds are not available — but we're happy to move your booking to another date at no charge where availability allows. We strongly recommend travel insurance.
